Does the Sun Really Damage Your Hair?

We all know the damage that sun does to your skin, but did you know that the sun can also wreak havoc on your hair?

Prolonged exposure to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays can cause damage to the hair’s cuticle causing dry, brittle hair, discoloration, split ends, and frizziness. If you’re worried about the sun’s rays, here are a few end of summer tips to prevent sun damage to your hair:

  1. Wear a hat
There are a ton of stylish options to protect your locks during a day at the beach or a long run outside. Anytime you know you’ll be outside for a long time, throw on a wide-brimmed or baseball hat and you’re set for the day.
  2. Try a leave in conditioner
A leave-in conditioner that contains zinc oxide can act like sunscreen for your hair and protect it against sun’s rays. If this doesn’t work for you, many dermatologists even suggest applying sunscreen directly onto your hair between the hours of 10a-3p.
  3. Skip the lemon juice
Chances are you’ve tried the old lemon juice technique where you spritz your hair with lemon and sit outside in the sun in hopes that it will lighten your locks. In actuality, this old trick actually speeds up sun damage and causes brittle hair. If you’re looking to lighten your hair, stop by the salon for some highlights to get the perfect sun-kissed look.
  4. Take care of your hair
If your summer activities did dry out your hair, our stylists suggest Living Proof’s Restore line to combat dry, damaged hair and leave it silky smooth.
